A real blog

This what our group came up with in that short time, feel free to add on to it, I don't think it matters what group you were in we're all in the same class.

Blog
  •  Conversation between students; not a 500 word paper; good practice for papers, but not good blogging.
  • aimed quote on Mon/Wed for blogs
  • others should be encouraged to comment
  • Scholarly?
  • we want to be short and to the point
Misc.
  • readings are thick
  • Not really learning CP; general interests
  • Final paper vs final project
  • Journal articles as busy work

I think a couple things need to be clarified and explained from the original written comments...

we all agreed that the blog should be a safe place to list thoughts about the course and unfortunately it has become another means of grading a paper. not too democratic. while it is great practice, this was proposed to us as a blog. with the concept of blog comes 21st century "baggage" if you will. a blog, according to our table, is not necessarily a scholarly article. to repeat the thoughts above, it is simply more of a diary to mark commentary in a chronological fashion. we were all urged in class this past week to "have a conversation" with our blogs, or communicate citing other people's ideas and pretty much critiquing the blog. forgive me if I'm wrong, but the 21st cenutry definition (as well as the button we push to enable this action) is "comment". concepts change daily. this is just another one of those changes.

I think the only thing that can be changed about the format of the class is to make it easier for everybody to get involved in a discussion. If the class is focused on a singular question and doesn't stray too much from it then it might be easier for people to wrap their brains around something that could be brought to the discussion. And maybe the class is too big for this. Perhaps breaking the class into smaller groups and given a topic to discuss for a while and then going somewhere to talk about it in a lot smaller groups, it'll take away the intimidation of talking to a larger group of people, gives more opportunity for everyone to contribute, and can take away the teacher aspect of the classroom.
