What’s the right way to teacher our students? Do we teach to something specific or do we keep the options open for our curriculum? In class on Tuesday, there were some really interesting points that came up in the classroom. It really got me thinking about if there is a right or a wrong way to about teaching our students, about how education in a way is becoming harder to obtain after high school because of money issues, about how technology in a way is starting to shape the way of our teaching, and the ideas of what we have to do when society changes.
First of all, just to get a job these days is not very easy. One must have at least a bachelor degree in college, to be considered for a job, the education level that one needs to get a job is getting higher and higher. The most difficult thing about obtaining this degree level, are the costs of schooling today. The prices are increasing every year, and are becoming unaffordable for a good portion of people. I don’t see how any of that is fair.
Second, I would like to talk about how we go about teaching students. Do we teacher them specific things to benefit them when they go out for jobs, or do we teach them a wide range of things? I think that this varies for every level of education. I think that one, who is an elementary school teacher, should teach a broad span of things to his/her students. Introduce different things, and basically just teach the essentials. Once a student reaches high school, I think that the teachers should teach their particular subject, and the students should pick the classes that most appeal to them. Specifics come in once a student is in college. I think that this is a time to pick a profession. Majors can change but I think that this is ultimately the time for a student to pick a specific path, and specialize in it.
Lastly, when the world and the society is changing, it is only right for the teacher to adapt to what is going on and go about teaching in the new ways. Lately, technology is becoming a big part of our society, one thing that our students are very involved in is the Internet, and I think we should use that to our advantage. We can incorporate the Internet by using you tube for lessons, by creating blogs; there are numerous ways to incorporate the new technology.
Basically, I don’t think there is necessarily a right or wrong way to go about teaching, but I think it is definitely necessary for the teacher to adapt to what is going on in the world.
